I’ve been having a week of 10-12 hour days. Yesterday was a banner day of about double the normal weekly pace of part drawings on a project that’s been killing me, and a conference call at 8:00AM for 70+ minutes (as you may recall). After that was Dumb Customer Question theater.
Fortunately, I’m taking off midday to go camping and taking my kayak. A weekend of steaks and chorizo and whatever else... and shortly before that, I’m picking up a new Stevens 555e I ordered.
Huzzah.

Oooo, purty. I love my Remington, but the best shotgun I’ve ever used was a double-barrel side-by-side. We were shooting skeet round-robin style that day because we had more people than guns. After being eliminated twice, I rolled back around to my turn and picked up the double-barreled 12 ga. left by the last one eliminated. There was something about that gun that was just right. I couldn’t miss. They eventually asked me to step down so someone else could shoot it. I wish I remembered the brand and model so I could go buy one of my own. All I know is that it was old and well-used.
E njoy your camping trip!

My best day’s entry on skeet shooting to date was with my Ithaca. A casual test has, however, indicated to me that my Mossberg bolt which somebody else was using is quite excellent - and the Ithaca has a close-bore slug barrel, so no options for controlling patterning.
The big thing with the Stevens is super light weight and easy swing, and it comes with a range of chokes. Should be a winner.

Oooo, please tell me how you like it. I’m actually looking for an O/U currently and can’t decide which one to get.

The only choke options I have on my Remington is to switch barrels. I have a shorter smooth barrel for short-range birding and a longer full-choke barrel for geese. I’ve thought about buying another barrel, but then I’d end up buying a couple of barrels - one with an adjustable choke and another rifled for hunting deer. At that point, it starts to make sense to buy a new gun....

This from all accounts was the best available option in 16GA, or certainly the most prolific and available new. Reviews are superb, and I decided to splurge on the nicer wood, effete silvered engraved receiver, chromed barrels, replaceable chokes, magnum chamber etc. etc. version. Which is to say, the version with a lot more at a reasonable price increase.
As to why
16ga:
lightness, whimsy, recoil in a super-lightweight, having two 16ga guns already, and shut the hell up, that’s why.

You don’t work for a blower OEM do you? If so, sorry for all the questions but get your documentation up to speed!

I have not limited myself on numbers of shotguns. That seems like it would be a silly idea.

I do not, but by a remarkable coincidence, I do get to handle stuff involving implementing HVAC fans and all kinds of things that Make Air Go Places.
I have the rare joy of often having to document things/technical write as well as design the things I’m writing about and give instructions to build them, so I have to struggle with the blind spot of it being obvious to me how it goes together... because I can “see” the whole part in my head and puzzled it out already while designing it.

Mine doesn’t see enough use to justify owning more than one. Perhaps when we move back to Texas and have better access to places where I can go shoot, then I’ll have reason to buy another.
I may have to consider swapping out my Mossberg home defense gun for something more outdoorsy. That thing is No Fun to shoot.
My first time hunting dove, my grandfather found a 20 ga. for me to use. I don’t know who it belonged to, but it had been sawed off to the legal limit, I suppose to be used for home defense or as a varmint gun. The game warden stopped by that morning and actually pulled out a measuring tape to make sure it was legal! Anyway, grandpa made jokes about it all day since I couldn’t hit anything with it. Funny guy asked me if I could hit one if he convinced it to land on the barrel first.
That’s what shooting the Mossberg is like. I’ve shot skeet with it, but hitting two out of three is about the best I can do. It kicks like a mule to boot. It looks badass and I’m sure it will blow good sized holes into anyone not welcome in our house, but forget hunting with it!

Manuals have become so generic due to ‘risk avoidance’ that they’re getting to be almost useless unless you have some intrinsic knowledge. I love old manuals or engineering books that actually describe WHY you set a certain clearance or bolt something up a certain way. I’ve got a huge catalog of stuff from the 80's and earlier...engineering books and stuff from OEM’s that’s worth their weight in gold if you are trying to troubleshoot or reverse-engineer stuff.

Beautiful! I know that this isn’t a gun forum but I would love to see what some of us have stashed away. While I’m far from being a perfect shot I do come from a long line of competitive skeet shooters and have always enjoyed dusting clays. We’ve got an automatic thrower in the barn that makes for good entertainment for friends and family during cookouts or other gatherings. I tend to avoid the modern home defense side of gun ownership but that’s mostly because I just love the history behind older models. That being said I would build a coyote killing AR in a heartbeat if my wife gave me the green light.
